What is density measurement?

Density measurement is based on a vibrating element. Changes in density affect the fundamental vibration. The change in vibration reveals the density of the fluid. The built-in temperature sensor measures the fluid’s temperature while compensating for the temperature’s effect on the transmitter.

Selection of density measurement devices

The density meter Bopp&Reuther DIMF measures the density and concentration of liquids, liquid mixtures, and multiphase fluids. The measurement is based on the medium passing through a vibrating element. The medium’s density causes variations in the vibration frequency.

The density sensor can be installed either directly in the line, in a storage tank, or in a bypass flow. It contains no moving parts and does not require an operating permit.

What is steam boiler conductivity measurement?

Conductivity measurement is used primarily in steam boilers to monitor boiler water and condensate. Limit values are set for the quality of the boiler water, which the conductivity measurement monitors. If the water quality deviates from the limit value, the sensor indicates the change to the system, based on which the surface blowdown / boiler conductivity is adjusted.

Proper boiler water conductivity is important not only for the internal condition of the boiler and minimized maintenance, but also because an effective conductivity measurement achieves an optimized water blowdown rate. In this case, as little make-up water as possible is required.

Conductivity measurement can also be used as a leak detector, for example in heat exchangers where two intermediary fluids with different electrical conductivities are used. If a leak occurs in the heat exchanger and the fluids mix, the conductivity sensor immediately triggers an alarm in the system.

Selection of Conductivity Measurement Devices

We assist in selecting measurement devices that meet the application’s requirements.

GESTRA LRG and LRGT conductivity sensors are available with either manual or automatic temperature compensation. The conductivity signal is forwarded via an active transmitter integrated into the sensor (output signal 4-20 mA) or by using a separate amplifier, which allows digital communication between the sensor and the amplifier. The conductivity of the medium to be measured must be at least 0.5 µS/cm.

GESTRA also offers the LRS 1-7a controller for conductivity sensors, which can, among other things, control a three-way valve to reject dirty condensate.

Pressure classes: PN 16-320
Other names: dry boiling protection, boiler lower surface limiter, boiler upper surface limiter dry boiling

What are boiler lower and upper level limiters?

The function of the lower surface limiter, i.e. the dry boiling sensor, is to shut off the burner of the steam or water boiler when the water level drops too low and thus prevent damage to the boiler or a potential boiler explosion.

In steam boilers, dry boiling protection can be implemented either with two separate self-monitoring sensors (GESTRA NRG) or with three pressure-differential transmitters. By using electrodes designed specifically for this function, problems such as those with impulse lines are avoided.

Choosing boiler lower and upper level limiters

GESTRA dry boiling electrodes are PED-approved self-monitoring models, in which communication between the sensor and amplifier is digital. In addition to the digital models, traditional models with SIL 3 safety rating are still available. The conductivity of the fluid must be at least 0.5 µS/cm. The pressure/temperature rating of the sensors is up to 183 bar(g)/400°C, i.e., PN 320.

GESTRA also offers a SIL 3 rated boiler water upper surface limiter.

We assist you in selecting the appropriate dry boiling protection based on the requirements of the application. Contact our representatives for more information.

What are steam boiler level control and monitoring devices?

Level transmitters transmit information about surface level movements to a controller, which in turn controls control valves and pumps according to set parameters.

Selection of level control and monitoring devices

For continuous level measurement, our selection includes GESTRA capacitive electrodes. The measurement works as follows: the sensor and the tank form the two electrodes of a capacitor. A change in capacitance due to a change in surface level is further converted by the electronics into surface level information, and the sensor sends a 4-20 mA signal to the system. The sensor is either equipped with an integrated active transmitter (4-20 mA output) or with a separate amplifier, in which case the communication between the sensor and the amplifier is digital.

When sufficient limit data is available for surface control, the best solution is GESTRA conductive electrodes, from which a maximum of four separate limit signals can be obtained. A compact model is also available, in which the electrode is integrated with four separate voltage-free switching contacts.

For surface level monitoring, there are SIL 3 rated water level monitoring systems available.

Aplisens pressure isolation transmitters are suitable for the same applications as electrode type sensors. Additionally, they can be used in applications where electrode type sensors are not suitable due to high temperature or pressure.

What is a Volume Converter?

Natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas are compressible media, so in metering for billing purposes, pressure and temperature must be taken into account. The volume converter provides a pressure- and temperature-compensated measurement of the gas volumetric flow.

The measured natural gas volumetric flow is converted to normal conditions (0 °C and 1.01325 bar). In precise measurements and large volumes, it is essential to also consider the compressibility factor. The gas meter provides a volumetric measurement to the volume converter, and the converter calculates the compensated measurement value. This information can be transmitted from the volume converter, for example, as a milliamp signal or as a pulse to a data logger.

What is a rotary meter?

Rotary meters are suitable for situations where a compact installation and accurate measurement result are desired. A silent section is not required before or after the meter in the pipeline.

The Uniflo and Delta series rotary meters are volumetric meters. The measurement technique is based on the movement of two octagon-shaped pistons. These displace a fixed volume of gas per rotation depending on the meter size.

Selecting a rotary meter

Rotary meters provide billing-readable meter readings and work well even in situations where the gas flow is weak or uneven. Thanks to the volumetric operating principle, the installation conditions do not affect the accuracy of the meters. The meters can be installed in both horizontal and vertical pipelines.

We assist in selecting a rotary meter that meets the requirements of your application. Ask for more information from our contacts.

What is a turbine meter?

The operation of turbine gas meters is based on the speed at which gas flows through the meter relative to the rotational speed of the turbine blade. Through a combination of a shaft, gear train, and magnetic coupling, the information is transferred to the counter. Since the gas volume is calculated from the flow rate, the flow conditions must be as optimal as possible. Turbine meters therefore perform best when the flow is relatively steady and calm.

Selection of the Turbine Meter

Factors influencing the selection of the meter include, among other things, the gas operating pressure, flow rate, installation location, and continuity of the flow.

We assist in choosing the remote control device that meets the application’s requirements. Ask our contact persons for more information.

For natural gas, biogas, biomethane, and liquefied petroleum gas

The versatile connection options of turbine meters include, among others, various pulse/port outputs. Depending on the gas quality, the meters can be equipped with either durable lubricant bearings or manually lubricated bearings. For corrosive gases, a PTFE-coated version is available.

For small flow rates, it may be worth considering a rotary piston meter.

Dresser Actaris Fluxi 2000/TZ meters are flow meters used to measure medium to large gas flows under medium to high pressure. The meters are optimized for use in all operations related to gas transmission or distribution. Various models are available with capacities ranging from 100 to 10 000 m³/h. Fluxi 2000/TZ meters are suitable for billing purposes.

MZ turbine meters are slightly less expensive than the TZ series and are well suited for self-monitoring and internal inspection measurements when there is no need for billing-grade measurement.

What is liquefied gas tank level measurement?

Liquefied gas tank level measurement monitors the tank’s surface level and the quantity of gas. The measuring equipment includes meter transmitters, meter receivers, remote monitoring systems, level control devices, and level measurement devices.

Selection of liquefied gas tank level measurement devices

We always assist in selecting level measurement devices that meet the requirements of the application.

Monitoring the surface level of tanks is one of the most important measurement applications in the process industry. Both continuous level measurement and level switches are used when measuring the surface.

Rochester gauges – float level indicators transmit information about the storage tanks’ surface level to a mechanical pointer display. A transmitter can be integrated into the display, which sends the information to the control room or level monitoring system.

Factors influencing the selection of a float level transmitter include the medium, temperature, tank size, and installation method. In addition to mechanical float level transmitters, the range includes various devices for processing level data, such as current and voltage transmitters and converters. Float level transmitters are suitable for monitoring the surface levels of various liquids, such as chemicals and petrochemical products, propane, butane, ammonia, and refrigerants.

Level switches transmit the information that the surface has reached a predetermined height. The system controls the process based on this data.

A level indicator allows you to see locally at what height the surface is in the tank.

Meter Receivers for Liquid Gas

The message from the float level transmitter can be received, for example, by an analog volume indicator or by a low/high limit alarm installed in the control room.

Remote Monitoring Systems for Liquid Gas

With Rochester’s wired CSU-3 digital receiver, limit alarms can be transmitted directly to a PC. The device features adjustable fill limit alarms, a 4-20 mA output, and relay outputs.
