What are pressostats and thermostats?

Pressostats, also known as pressure switches, and thermostats, also known as temperature switches, are process safety switches that shut the device down when a limit is exceeded. The pressure switch receives its signal from pressure while the thermostat from temperature.

Typical applications for a pressure switch include acting as a pressure limiter for a steam boiler. If the pressure rises too high, the pressure switch shuts off the pressure supply. Similarly, it operates as an on-off control for a pump.

Typical applications for a thermostat include, for example, acting as temperature limiters for pipelines or as forced controls for systems, whereby the thermostat sends a signal when the cooling water supply exceeds the set temperature.

What is a pressure containment valve?

A pressure containment valve ensures that the pressure downstream of the valve remains at a predetermined level. If the pressure tends to drop, the valve opens to add pressure into the system. Otherwise, the valve stays closed.

Pressure containment valves are suitable for steam, liquids, and gases.

Choosing a pressure containment valve

For pressure containment, you can choose whether to use valves where the pressure regulation occurs entirely inside the valve as a function between the inflow pressure of the line and the adjustable closing spring of the valve, as in the case of NIEZGODKA and ARI pressure containment valves.

Another approach, allowing slightly more stable pressure containment, is used in models where the pressure is regulated by a membrane actuator. An impulse pipe connects the actuator to the upstream side of the valve. On the other side of the membrane, there is a spring; the pressure setting can be changed by adjustment of its spring force. GESTRA pressure containment valves are based on this technology.

We assist in the selection and sizing of a pressure containment valve that meets the requirements of your application.

What is a Pressure Reducing Valve?

The function of a pressure reducing valve is to lower the system pressure to a predetermined level. A self-acting pressure reducing valve operates by means of an intermediate medium. The desired pressure on the secondary side is selected as the valve’s set pressure.

Pressure reducing valves are suitable for steam, liquids, and gases.

Pressure Reducing Valve Selection

We assist in selecting and sizing a pressure reducing valve that meets the requirements of the application.

Two techniques can be applied for self-acting pressure reduction.

In the first model, a diaphragm-operated disc is installed on top of the valve, to which pressure is applied through an impulse pipe from the valve’s secondary side. In this case, the valve functions based on the pressure coming through the impulse pipe and the spring built into the valve. The spring force, to which the set pressure is adjusted, tends to open the valve when the pressure from the diaphragm device attempts to close it. This operation is found in ARI-Armaturen and GESTRAN pressure reducing valves.

In the second, slightly simpler model, the valve opening is based solely on the spring force built into the valve and its internal structure. This technique is applied in NIEZGODKAN pressure reducing valves.

Steam and Condensate Usage

If it is a steam pressure reduction station, the expansion steam after pressure reduction must be taken into account and the pipe size increased. We are happy to provide guidelines for pipeline sizing and flow rate management.

In large steam pressure reduction stations, a microturbine can be installed alongside the pressure reducing valve, thereby recovering energy from the pressure reduction.

What is a gas blower?

Pressure boosting blowers are suitable for increasing the pressure of natural gas and biogas, for example at biogas plants or natural gas pipelines, where it is necessary to transfer low-pressure gas from one place to another.

Choosing a gas blower

Mapro International is a traditional and well-known Italian blower manufacturer. They offer a wide range of different blowers for air and combustible gases. Mapro also has its own product line of blowers suitable for biogas, and Mapro’s blowers are widely used in biogas plants. All blowers naturally comply with European standards and, if necessary, are ATEX classified.

What is a Pressure Regulator?

In land, liquid, and biogas applications, a pressure regulator is a device that reduces the gas pressure to a desired set pressure regardless of possible fluctuations in the inlet pressure.

Almost all pressure regulators of this type are self-powered and spring-operated. In larger sizes, a pilot regulator, which is integrated into the main regulator body, is often used.

Pressure regulation typically also includes safety devices required by law. There are many pressure regulators on the market that have an integrated safety shut-off and/or auxiliary safety valve in the same body.

Selecting a Pressure Regulator

When selecting a pressure regulator, the following should be taken into account:

  • Minimum and maximum inlet pressures
  • Design pressure of the pipeline
  • Highest and lowest flow rate
  • Operating medium
  • Temperature ranges
  • Appropriate materials
  • Equipment sizing considering the above factors

Our offerings include, among others, Dresser Actaris (formerly Itron), whose manufactured regulators are used very extensively in Finland. Among these, the most commonly used in smaller sizes are the 133 and 233 series regulators, and for larger applications, the RB 1700/1800, RB4000, RB4700 series as well as the RR16 series.

In addition to Dresser regulators, our selection also includes many other pressure regulators from various manufacturers, so that we can meet customer needs as well as possible.

We help you choose a pressure regulator that meets the requirements of your application. Ask our contact persons for more information.

What is a pressure transmitter?

The function of pressure transmitters is to convey the electrical signal derived from the system pressure to the controller, which subsequently adjusts the process in a predetermined manner. The pressure transmitter also provides the compensation and calculation unit with information on the actual pressure value, based on which the density of saturated steam is calculated or the volumetric flow of gaseous media is converted to normal cubic meters, Nm3.

Selecting a pressure transmitter

Our range includes Aplisens and Nuova Fima pressure transmitters. If the media are demanding, the Aplisens transmitters can be equipped with various diaphragm constructions. Meanwhile, Nuova Fima pressure transmitters are more cost-effective fixed-range devices.

What is a differential pressure transmitter?

Differential pressure transmitters measure the pressure difference and transmit electrical data to the system. For example, in critical applications, the differential pressure measurement can be made across the system’s filter. If the filter begins to clog and the pressure difference increases, an electrical alarm is sent to the system for maintenance procedures.

Because differential pressure transmitters are very precise and measure extremely small pressure differences, they can also be used for level measurement, which is based on the hydraulic head of the liquid. Especially in high-pressure systems, this pressure-difference-based measurement is an excellent alternative to other level measurement methods.

In flow measurements based on pressure difference, the differential pressure transmitter is also an essential component for measurement accuracy.

Selection of the differential pressure transmitter

We assist in selecting a differential pressure transmitter that meets the requirements of your application. Ask our contacts for more information.

For dirty media, different diaphragm intermediaries are used, which are also available with wash valves. For the food industry, pressure transmitters can be equipped with hygienic connections.

APLISENS programmable digital differential pressure transmitters equipped with a self-sealing sensing element are suitable for many applications in industry. A digital display is included as standard, allowing the device to be set up in the field without a programming device. The transmitters can also be supplied pre-assembled with 3- or 5-way valve blocks.
