What is a Plate Heat Exchanger?

A plate heat exchanger is a device in which heat is transferred between two different media. The heat exchanger consists of a plate pack in which the media flow on different sides of the plates.

Welded plate heat exchangers are physically smaller in dimensions compared to tube heat exchangers with the same heat transfer capacity. The installation space required for a plate heat exchanger is only 20–25 % of that required for a tube heat exchanger. The efficiency is high. The welded structure is mechanically robust and is also well-suited for cryogenic conditions.

Other names: internal tank safety valve

What is an internal tank safety valves?

In-tank safety valves allow control of the medium outflow from the storage tank. Such valves are used as flank valves in cryogenic medium tanks. The operation is based on the plug-shaped shutoff mechanism in the valve, which is located inside the tank. The plug’s sealing surface is passed through and secured with an O-ring to achieve excellent tightness. In normal operation, the valve is in the open position, allowing the medium to flow out of the tank. The flow is then controlled by a gliding valve installed in the pipeline. In the event of faults or during repair work on the gliding valve, the plug valve located inside the tank is closed.

Selection of an internal tank safety valves

The PROTEGO SI/FI valve closes from inside the tank, so leakage will not occur if the shutoff mechanisms located outside the tank were to be damaged. The valves can also be serviced, as only the mounting flange is welded to the tank. The external parts of the valve can be replaced without emptying the tank.

We assist in the selection and sizing of a safety valve that meets the requirements of the application.

Other names: rupture disc, rupture membrane, explosive disc, rupture disc, bursting disc

What is a Rupture Disc

Rupture discs (Rupture / Bursting Discs) are also called rupture discs, rupture membranes, and explosive discs. The names aptly describe the disc’s function. A rupture disc is a specially engineered metal or graphite disc that is manufactured with a specific rupture pressure. In a process pipe, the rupture disc is completely sealed and retains the pressure behind it, provided the rupture pressure is not exceeded. When the pressure is exceeded, the rupture disc bursts, releasing the pressure out of the system. Once the pressure has dropped back to the normal line, a new intact disc is installed.

Rupture discs can be equipped with sensors and/or gauges that indicate the disc’s rupture.

A rupture disc is usually installed in a separate holder. The holder is a good solution because the risk of changes in rupture pressure during installation or operation is significantly smaller.

A rupture disc can also be used together with a safety valve, in which case it protects the safety valve from, for example, an aggressive or corrosive medium.

An explosion panel works in a similar way, but they are typically used for structural explosion protection, for example in dust explosions.

Rupture Disc Selection

Rupture discs are especially significantly lighter than safety valves of equivalent size, particularly in larger dimensions.

When selecting and sizing a rupture disc, several factors must be considered. These include, for example, operating pressure, desired rupture pressure, whether the load is pulsating or steady, whether the disc needs to withstand vacuum conditions, whether disc fragmentation is acceptable, whether rupture information should be transmitted to the control room, liquid/gas applications, etc. Rupture discs come with different manufacturing and rupture tolerances, which are nowadays incorporated into the operating range tolerance (min./max.). Our sales team will size and select the appropriate, cost-effective rupture disc from ZOOK’s range on your behalf.

Material options include, for example, nickel, RST/HST, hastelloy, inconel, monel, tantalite, titanium, silver, gold, graphite, etc.

What is a Safety Valve?

A safety valve is a critical safety device designed to release pressure from a process when it exceeds a predetermined set pressure. The set pressure is maintained by a spring compressed between spring plates. The upper end of the spring plate is locked, allowing the force to act only downward. If the pressure beneath the disc surpasses the spring force, the safety valve opens. The valve recloses when the pressure drops to 10–30% below the set pressure. Therefore, the operating pressure must not be too high.

Safety Valve Selection

We size and select safety valves suitable for our customers’ applications. Please provide the application and process parameters to our sales representative, who will assist in selecting the appropriate safety valve.

We maintain a substantial buffer stock of various body types and springs. For urgent deliveries, we can quickly and reliably set the valves to the desired set pressure. We also offer safety valve maintenance services.

Our product range includes a comprehensive selection of safety valves to meet different process requirements.

The range includes both low-lift and full-lift safety valves, valves with open and closed bonnets, and hoods ranging from open to gas-tight models. This selection ensures suitable models for steam, liquid, and gas applications. Dynamic and/or static backpressure must not exceed 10% of the set pressure. If this cannot be avoided, the safety valve can be equipped with a bellows.

Safety Valves for Steam

In steam processes, full-lift safety valves are typically used, where the inlet flange is two sizes smaller than the outlet flange. This design accounts for the expansion of the medium and provides better capacity. Our product range includes both DIN and ASME standards.

Safety Valves for Process Media

Our range includes small threaded stainless steel safety valves for the process industry, as well as large steam safety valves for high-pressure applications, available in both DIN and ASME standards.

Safety Valves for Liquefied Petroleum Gas and Natural Gas

We offer safety valves suitable for liquefied petroleum gas and natural gas applications.

Safety Valves for Cryogenic Media

Our selection covers safety valves for cryogenic media such as hydrogen, LNG, oxygen, nitrogen, and argon.

The HEROSE cryogenic safety valves we represent are certified according to global CN, TR CU, and ASME certifications. This allows them to be used worldwide, regardless of the final installation location. Cryogenic safety valves are available in sizes DN 6–50 and can withstand pressures up to 550 bar, operating within a temperature range of -270 to +400°C. The safety valves are primarily made of stainless steel, but they can also be manufactured from bronze and brass.

What is an Actuator-operated Gate Valve?

A gate valve can be equipped with an actuator. This allows the valve to be operated from a location other than in the immediate vicinity of the valve.

The wedge sliding gate valve requires more force compared to other types of shut-off valves. Therefore, the most common actuator for them is an electric actuator.

For knife gate valves, due to the low torque requirement, we recommend using a pneumatic actuator because of its high closing speed.

Selection of Actuator-operated Gate Valves

We assist in selecting and sizing an actuator-operated sliding gate valve that meets the requirements of the application. We collaborate with the most common electric actuator manufacturers, such as Auma, Bernard, and Rotork.

Actuators can be equipped with additional devices or Fail-Safe functionality, whereby the actuator drives the valve to the closed position,
even if the power to the system is lost. Additionally, they can be fire protected.

What is a Wedge Gate Valve?

Wedge gate valves are used in demanding industrial applications where nominal sizes can be large and pressures as well as temperatures high. The gate can be two-piece, solid, or flexible. The English terms are split, solid and flexible wedge.

A two-piece gate, as the name suggests, consists of two gate parts. This enables tight sealing even if the valve experiences slight twisting or changing operating temperatures.

In a flexible gate, a groove is machined into the edges of the gate. This groove allows the sealing surfaces to conform finely under high forces, making it easier to open the valve.

A solid gate does not have these grooves. It is suitable for compact designs due to limited space and for large sizes.

Wedge Gate Valve Selection

The seals of a wedge gate valve can be fixed, threaded, pressed, welded, or some combination thereof. Almost any metal material can be used for the sealing surfaces. Every valve is 100 % leak-proof when leaving the factory. Tightness is verified through hydro or gas pressure testing.

A wedge gate valve can be equipped with a bonnet relief valve/plate for expanding media. Also, the other gate can be drilled to relieve pressure, in which case the valve is leak‐proof in only one direction.

In terms of operation, a wedge gate valve is cumbersome to turn. However, as a troubleshooting solution, one can consider using an operating tool or actuator versions. As a rule of thumb, a globe valve is considered a better choice for nominal sizes up to DN 150 and pressures up to PN40 and below. Wedge gate valves for PN160 and above are used starting from DN65.

All gate valves can be equipped with actuators in addition to manual operation.

Konwell’s product range includes Armatury Group’s, RT Valvole and OMB’s wedge gate valves.

ASME valves are used in Finland mainly in the petrochemical industry. In addition to traditional plug-sealed models, our product range includes jacket-sealed models for conditions where it is critical that the medium does not escape to the atmosphere through the valve plug. OMB’s sizes start at DN15 and pressure classes from ANSI150….2500#. Connection types are flanged, socket weld (SW) or butt weld (BW).

For Steam, Condensate and Process Media

The most typical materials are carbon steel and acid-resistant steel, but other material options are also available.

For Liquid Fuels and Gases

For gas and liquid applications, mostly the same gate valves can be used. However, in gas applications it is important to pay more attention to the emission level from the bonnet seal. A low-emission valve is both more user- and environmentally friendly. Additionally, any leakage from the bonnet seal constitutes a loss of the medium. In addition to low-emission models with quarantine seals (ISO 15848, API 622, API 624), our product range includes jacket-sealed models for process conditions where it is essential to ensure that the medium does not escape through the quarantine seal at all.

The most typical materials are carbon steel and acid-resistant steel, but we also offer other alternatives such as economical spheroidal graphite cast iron, cold-resistant LF2 steel, and more exotic materials.

The product range covers gate valves for gas and liquid fuel transfer and distribution pipelines. Our range includes sizes DN 15–1000 and pressure classes PN 4-320. ANSI classifications up to 2500# are also available. The connection types are either flanged or welded.

For Cryogenic Media

A cryogenic wedge gate valve differs mechanically from a conventional wedge gate valve to some extent. In a cryogenic valve, there is an extended bonnet that ensures the bonnet seal remains warmer than the medium. In addition, any potential pressure buildup in the interspace is mechanically prevented. Typically, the pressure relief in cryogenic gate valves occurs through a drilling in the gate or body, which is why the valves are leak‐proof in only one direction. Cryogenic wedge gate valves are delivered clean and dry.

Our selection of cryogenic gate valves is extensive. From the quality range of HEROSEN, cryogenic gate valves are available in sizes DN25-100. Larger sizes are manufactured by RT.

What is an actuator operated ball valve?

A ball valve can be equipped with an actuator. In this case, the valve can be operated from a location other than its immediate vicinity.

The most typical actuator for ball valves is a rotary pneumatic actuator. It is either 2-position, where compressed air both closes and opens the valve, or 1-position (so-called spring-return), where on loss of pressure the actuator’s closing spring either opens or closes the valve.

Most rotary electric actuator models available on the market are also suitable for ball valves.

Selection of actuator operated ball valve

We assist in the selection and sizing of the appropriate ball valve-actuator combination according to the requirements of the application.

For all actuator options, limit and installation data is available and they can also be connected to a bus.

What is a soft seated ball valve?

A soft seal typically refers to PTFE composite seals, with which ball valves are suitable for applications where the temperature does not rise very high (max. 220 °C).

Choosing a Soft Seated Ball Valve

We assist in sizing and selecting the appropriate ball valve for your application.

Our product range includes both two-way and three-way valves. Three-way ball valves are also suitable for distribution applications. There are several sealing options available, for example PTFE, RTFE, TGV, AM, DEVLON, etc.

Our range of three-way valves features both L-ball and T-ball designs for 90° rotating valves. Additionally, the L-ball valves offer a “full bore transflow” option for 120° rotating valves when handling a more viscous medium.

Ball valves are available in one-piece, two-piece, and three-piece constructions. Among these, the two-piece and three-piece models are easier to service.

Connection options include welding ends, threaded, or flanged. There is also an alternative – the slim ALFA 10 model which is only the length of the ball. It is a lightweight and cost-effective choice for many applications that require a flanged model but allow for a shorter construction length.

Since the ball valve is a typical process valve, it also has a wide range of materials available. Various combinations of body, ball, and seal materials ensure that a suitable model can be found for different media.

Our range includes valves in accordance with both DIN and ASME classifications.

Our ball valves are available with accessories required for manual, pneumatic, or electric actuators.

For steam, condensate and process media

The smaller sizes of ball valves are of a floating design, and the larger ones are trunnion-mounted. They feature a Fire Safe construction, antistatic properties according to BS 5146, and comply with the TA-Luft TüV standards.

We can also supply heating jackets, extension stems, and special sealing solutions (TI, V).

For liquid fuels

In the gas and fuel sectors, a Fire Safe construction is generally required for valves.

For example, in the case of ALFA Valvole, the Fire Safe EN ISO 10497 – API607 V test requirements are observed.

Antistatic properties, on the other hand, comply with BS 5146 and TA-Luft TÜV standards.

Smaller sizes are generally of a floating design, and larger sizes use a trunnion-mounted ball design. However, in some cases, even for smaller sizes it is necessary to opt for a trunnion design, for example at high flow rates.

Our range includes valves from manufacturers such as ALFA Valvole and OMB Spa.

For cryogenic media

Ball valves intended for cryogenic use differ from conventional ball valves in several fundamental ways. In a cryogenic valve, there is an extension stem that ensures the seal of the stem remains at a higher temperature than the medium. Materials have been selected to withstand extreme cold. The finished valve is clean and dry.

Ball valves designed for cryogenic use are equipped with a venting system for the interspace, because the cold liquid remaining in the interspace expands when it vaporizes and would damage the valve without pressure relief. The pressure relief is achieved either through a drilling on the opposite side or via spring-loaded self-relieving seals. Drilling is a traditional and reliable solution that is also suitable for a floating valve and works reliably. The downside of a drilled pressure relief is that the valve can only be tight in one direction. A more advanced solution is to use self-relieving seals. In this case, the seals of the trunnion-mounted ball valve are designed so that when the interspace pressure rises above the pipeline pressure, the seal allows the pressure to be vented.

Our selection of cryogenic ball valves is comprehensive. We represent OMB and PENTA. Through us, soft-seated and metal-seated valves are available in both floating and trunnion-mounted constructions. Body designs include top-entry and side-entry. Valves are available with full bore and reduced bore.

What is an Actuator Operated Globe Valve?

Actuator operated globe valves can be used both as control valves and shut-off valves. An actuator is mounted on the valve, allowing the valve to be controlled remotely from its immediate vicinity.

Selection of an Actuator Operated Globe Valve

All of our globe valves are available with actuators. We assist in selecting and sizing the appropriate valve and actuator, taking into account the requirements of the application.

Actuator Operated Shut-Off Valves

The basic model is a poppet-sealed shut-off valve, but in specific cases – for example, in thermal oil applications or for toxic media – diaphragm-sealed actuator operated shut-off valves can be used.

For emergency shut-off operation, there are emergency shut-off valves that rapidly and tightly close the pipeline in the event of a disturbance. There are emergency shut-off valves available that can close the pipeline securely in under a second during system disturbances. This protects the entire system from damage and potential hazardous situations.

Actuator Operated Control Valves

Our product range includes a wide selection of 2-way and 3-way control valves for various applications. Two-way valves are available with a linear or equal-percentage flow characteristic. Three-way valves can be used for either mixing or diverting applications and are available with a built-in, adjustable minimum turn, for example, for boiler feedwater valves.

We size the valves using the ARI-myValve sizing program. With this, we verify the valve’s capacity as well as ensure that the valve is not oversized, check the flow velocities inside the valve, and assess the noise level caused by pressure regulation. ARI valves can be equipped with various orifice inserts, which can significantly reduce the valve’s noise level. In the 470 series valve, the globe and the insert can also be replaced later, allowing the valve’s KVS value to be adjusted according to changing process conditions.

Pneumatic or Electric Actuator?

Valves can be equipped with pneumatic or electric actuators. A pneumatic actuator is generally faster and more durable than an electric actuator. Electric actuators can be fitted with a safety device that closes the valve during a power failure.

ARI-Armaturen’s own PREMIO actuator is designed so that its output force exactly matches the force required by ARI’s valve. This also results in a clear cost advantage.

For globe valves, we primarily use the factory’s own actuators, allowing us to size the actuator perfectly for each valve type, but we can also supply the valve with actuators from other manufacturers, such as AUMA, BERNAD, or ROTORK.

Positioners and limit switches are available as accessories.
